Fire & Ice reviews
I’ve collated here some of the reviews of my book, Fire & Ice, which is out now in paperback:
“Fire & Ice is an assured, essential read on everything you could hope to know about volcanoes on both our world and others. It captures the intrigue, mystery and wonder of space, and underscores just how much we have to thank volcanoes for on Earth.”
– New Scientist
“Starkey’s excellent book is the first to examine these extra-terrestrial volcanoes of our Solar System . It’s an explosive read in more ways than one.”
– Forbes
“In Fire & Ice, geologist and solar system maven Natalie Starkey reveals to us that Earth is not the only host for active volcanoes. You can find them in places not previously imagined, like the surfaces of other planets and their moons. And you think you’ve seen everything? Some of these volcanoes even spew ice. Read all about it in this mind-expanding book.”
– Neil deGrasse Tyson, Astrophysicist American Museum of Natural History
“[Starkey] masterfully weaves the latest information we have about volcanoes throughout the Solar System into a broader narrative about planets and moons themselves. The result is a book about volcanoes – and so much more […] entertaining and informative.”
– Nature
“A FANTASTIC exploration of the hidden workings of the planets, and a timely reminder of what a fascinating and dramatic place our solar system is.”
– Dallas Campbell, Science television presenter and author
“Fire & Ice explores a unique blend of space volcanoes – from the inner workings to the outer landscapes. Natalie journeys into the weird nature of volcanism and dives into current outstanding questions that we are still exploring.”
– Dr Caitlin Ahrens, NASA / USRA
“Natalie Starkey leads us on an incredible journey across our Solar System, revealing a wonderful variety of volcanic geology. A fascinating look at volcanoes and the space science that enables us to study them.”
– Rebecca Williams, Volcanologist
“Starkey takes readers on NASA’s expeditions, onto islands, and between tectonic plates undersea with vivid, immersive descriptions. The result is a thoroughly accessible look at a lesser-known part of the universe.”

New StarTalk Cosmic Queries episode out NOW: Volcanoes & Life in the Universe
I was invited as a guest on a new StarTalk Cosmic Queries episode, ‘Volcanoes & Life in the Universe’ recently. It was hosted by Neil deGrasse Tyson with comic co-host Paul Mercurio. As usual, this was super fun to record and we discussed all sorts of things, including labradoodles on Pluto (you’ll need to have a listen to figure out how that happened?!).
Fire & Ice paperback coming soon
I’m very happy to say that the paperback of Fire & Ice: The Volcanoes of the Solar System is out on June 1st in the UK and India (1st August in the USA; 3rd October in Australia).
VolcaKnowledge Podcast
It was a delight to speak to Dr Samuel Mitchell who has created a fantastic new podcast, VolcaKnowledge, exploring how volcanoes interact across nature, culture and society. I was interviewed by him for the final episode of Series 1 and you can watch and listen here.
New podcast out: Fiery Worlds and go for Mars
I was invited to chat to Sue and Richard of the Naked Scientists – Space Boffins podcast recently about space volcanoes and it’s out today. Also featuring in this episode are Mark McCaughrean of ESA speaking about JWST and Andrew Coates of UCL speaking about ExoMars. Lots of space fun to be had, you can have a listen on the link here.
Natalie Starkey Explains Underwater Volcanoes with Neil deGrasse Tyson
Here’s a short volcano explainer I did recently with Neil deGrasse Tyson and Chuck Nice for StarTalk. We chatted about undersea volcanoes and the recent eruption of a volcano in Tonga.
Fire & Ice at The Royal Institution
The talk I gave to The Royal Institution for the launch of my book Fire & Ice in September 2021 is now available on YouTube.
New: Cosmic Cast podcast
I had the pleasure of chatting with the Cosmic Cast podcast team (An Earth and planetary science podcast from researchers at the University of Manchester) about my science research, career through science to writing and science communication a few weeks back and it’s now available to watch on YouTube.
Podcast week for Fire & Ice: 3 new shows out
This week I’ve got not one, not two, but three new podcasts out where I discuss space volcanoes and my book Fire & Ice. The first was StarTalk’s new show, then BBC The Sky at Night followed by the podcast from Kielder Observatory. I’ve linked to them all here in case you want to listen to any.
